Exploring the Volcanoes

The National Volcano Park is formed by three of the country’s most important volcanoes: the Izalco Volcano, the Santa Ana Volcano, and the Cerro Verde. The Izalco and Santa Ana volcanoes offer the most challenging hikes; for less experienced hikers, the Cerro Verde offers a variety of scenic trails well worth exploring.

After hiking one or more of the volcanoes—the choice is yours—spend a day or two relaxing at Lake Coatepeque, one of El Salvador’s most beautiful attractions located in an ancient volcanic crater and surrounded by lush vegetation that drapes a hilly backdrop. Enjoy a swim in the lake, take a boat-ride to its small island, kayak, or simply lie on the dock and soak up the sun.
